“Oh yes it’s noodle night
And the feeling’s right
Oh yes it’s noodle night
Oh what a night (oh what a night)”
-My flatmate and I, Edinburgh 2012-13
Thursdays are a busy day. Thursdays are a long day. I’m also pretty sure that my Thursdays start before everybody elses and end a lot later.
Both my flatmate and myself get home fairly late, neither of us having eaten either.
Now I don’t know about you, but I am not a nice hungry person, so whatever it is that I have on a Thursday night, it has to be blooming quick!
Enter the savior of my teenage years, Mama noodles.
I learnt to love Mama noodles when I lived in Thailand as a teenager. I didn’t have a normal ex-pat life, all my friends were Thai. So I ate the way they ate. And Mama noodles are what they ate.
Far from your average packet noodles…Mama are spicy (well the Creamy Tom Yam ones that I have are anyway.) And please don’t be tempted to take them at packet value, you make them your own.
MY Mama Noodles go as follows:
Add some Maggi seasoning sauce, lime juice along with the seasoning and poach an egg in the water. I like to take the egg out after a couple of minutes so that the yoke is still runny in the middle. (mmmmmm)
Then add veg…mooli is good to add, as is shredded white cabbage (and any other veg for that matter, it’s really up to you.)
When the veg is cooked a bit (still crunchy, not soggy) you add the noodles.
Meanwhile, in a living room nearby, a flat mate is getting the DVD ready on pause so that no time is wasted.
Noodle night is also Chuck night.
Ah! Good times.
Long live noodle night.
I have nominated you for the Versatile Blogger Award! Details are on my latest post.
Oh my goodness! What a surprise, Thank you! Xxgxx
How can you have the same childhood instant noodles as ME? I grew up in Bangkok so it’s not that surprising but errrrr…you…?!?!
Haha! I grew up (teenage years anyway) in Thailand! I am incredibly biased but I think Thai food is THE best in the world! 🙂
hahaha that explains it! Isn’t it the best instant noodles. I’m very MSG sensitive but once in a while I have to have it. My favorite is the mama with pork (mama moo sub) but did you know about their new addition, Mama Kaeng Khiao Wan?
No! I didn’t know that….I shall have to have a look at what the Asian supermarkets here have! I really do love the Tom Yam Nam Khon flavor!!!!!! Mmmmmmm, it makes me happy! Did u used to pick the veg from the hedges to put in it too? I don’t remember what it was called now! Hehe
Which one? I’m not sure, HoRaPa the Thai basil, Kaprao, Napa cabbage, scallion, cilantro? I did so many thing with it though. I added egg, meat balls, shrimps, veggies, and many other goodies available in my fridge.
Your favorite is also mine 2nd favorite. I usually eat it slightly dryer. I drain water out after the noodle cooked then add the powder in just to get the intense taste, then I add frankfurter too and of course scallion and cilantro. Mama is simply is HAPPINESS in the bag! (haha I think by now people probably vote to take “gourmet” part our of my name!)
I honestly can’t remember what it was called now!!! That’s so annoying! I have eaten it the dry way too, man that’s good, but I always go back to the soup way! Comfort food indeed hey? And gourmet is a matter of taste….mama noodles got taste! 🙂
